Want to lose weight? Be ready to balance your expectations about how sustained weight management really works.

You don’t need us to tell you that losing weight — and keeping it off — is hard. But it is useful to hear why weight loss is so difficult. That intel can help you stop blaming yourself for every setback and increase your chances of success. Forget the gimmicks: It’s time to face the facts about weight loss and go get the body you want to live in.

    1

    Your Body Works Against You

    an empty plate

It’s not just your imagination: When you try to lose weight, you’re fighting both your cravings and your own body. Weight loss decreases the hormone leptin, which signals to your brain that you’re full, and increases the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates hunger, according to research.

[1] According to Everyday Health network site Lose It!, hormone imbalances of leptin, ghrelin, and many others make it even harder for you to keep the pounds off.

Plus, if you cut too many calories too quickly, your metabolism will slow, says Sabrena Jo, PhD, senior director of science and research for the American Council on Exercise in San Diego. “If you cut calories drastically, and as a result you drop a lot of weight fairly quickly, it’s likely that you’re losing some muscle. Muscle is really the engine of metabolism, so that contributes to a lower metabolism,” she explains.

Eating too little also makes you more likely to rebound and go in the opposite direction by overeating because you were restricting yourself for so long. “We recommend doing things more moderately: Increasing physical activity and decreasing calories have been shown to be what works in the long run,” Dr. Jo says.

9 Hard Truths About Weight Loss That Can Help You Slim Down

Do you find that, no matter how hard you try, you can’t lose weight and keep it off? Forget fad diets, and face the truth about what works and what doesn’t.

    2

    There Are No Easy Fixes

    a calendar and an hourglass

Wishing you were 20 pounds lighter in time for your high school reunion next month will not make that happen, and there are no realistic scenarios that will change that hard truth.

Certain newer prescription weight loss drugs can help with quick weight loss, but they can be expensive and come with unpleasant side effects. Plus, they aren’t right for everyone. Then there are extreme diets, which can wreak havoc on your metabolism and damage your weight loss efforts for the long term.

“When you’re trying to lose weight, it’s hard to be patient,” says Mark Pettus, MD, the chief medical officer of Preventia, an online health technology platform based in Indianapolis, and host of the podcast The Health Edge.

If you’re looking to lose weight through diet and lifestyle choices, healthcare professionals generally recommend a slow and steady pace so that keeping the weight off is more sustainable.

Aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, as this pace is easiest to maintain, Dr. Pettus says.

    3

    Exercise Can’t Conquer All

    a woman upset after exercising

Yes, exercise helps you lose weight and keep it off: Research discovered more than a decade ago that people who maintain their weight loss exercise for at least 60 minutes most days.

    [2]

But it’s also important to know that it’s nearly impossible to lose weight from exercise alone, Pettus says. Just do the math: A 135-pound person biking 60 minutes at a moderate pace will burn around 500 calories.

[3] You can put all that back on with one post-workout meal. To lose a pound of fat, you have to burn 3,500 calories more than you consume, so you can see how hard it is to exercise your way through a poor diet. Instead, you have to watch what you eat and how much you exercise, Pettus says. If there’s any magic to dieting, it’s in that combination.

    4

    Diet Supplements Don’t Work

    supplement bottles

Those pill bottles on the drugstore shelves that claim to supercharge your metabolism are tempting, but there’s little evidence that they work. One review of more than 1,700 articles on various supplements and alternative therapies, including green tea, acupuncture, and caffeine, found there was little to no high-quality evidence to support their value in aiding weight loss.

    [4]

Instead of using these fad supplements, try focusing on better-supported weight loss strategies, such as eating less and exercising more.

    5

Fad Diets Don’t Work for Long

    pressed juices

Grapefruit. Maple syrup. Cabbage. Apple cider vinegar. Juice. All these “miracle” diets are supposed to help you melt pounds and trigger fat-burning. Fad diets work in the short term through calorie restriction, but they fail to deliver long-lasting results, says Jo. “The problem is that people typically lack the desire to eschew entire food groups or severely limit their caloric intake, so eventually a more inclusive, calorically dense way of eating returns,” she explains.

    6

    One Diet Doesn’t Fit All

    a table with food

Everyone’s body is different, so the diet that works for your friend, coworker, mother, or sister might not be successful for you. When looking at how best to lose weight, consider your health and family history, your metabolism, your activity level, your age, your gender, and your likes and dislikes. When you’re dieting, it’s important to allow yourself some foods that you enjoy, per Lose It!, or else you’ll feel deprived and be less likely to stick with an overall healthy eating plan, Jo says. For weight loss success, you need to drill down on what works for you — not what’s working for the other people in your life.

    7

Cardio Is Essential (and Strength Training Helps, Too)

    a woman strength training

According to the current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults should get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity (or a combination of both), preferably spread throughout the week, plus two or more days of muscle-strengthening activities.

[5] And every bit counts — the recommendation is to move more throughout the day, even if it’s just a walk around the block.

These guidelines should help most people lose weight, says Jo, but obese people or people with a lot of weight to lose need to be even more active, working up to at least 30 minutes per day over time. Plus, don’t skip the strength training, which supports muscle, bone, and joint health and function, adds Jo. Increased muscle mass also gives your metabolism a slight boost — and makes you look more toned.

    8

He Can Eat More Than She Can

a man and woman eating food together

It doesn’t seem fair, but men often can eat more than women and still lose weight. That’s because people assigned male at birth tend to naturally burn more calories than those born female, thanks to their larger size, muscle mass, and elevated levels of the hormone testosterone, which promotes muscle growth, Jo explains. Plus, the male body is genetically designed for more muscle and less fat than the female body because it doesn’t need to store the energy required to bear children, she adds. Once you come to terms with this fact, the scale will thank you.

    9

    It’s Not a Diet, It’s a Lifestyle Change

    a woman exercising outside

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to change your behavior until you reach your goal weight — and for the months and years to follow. That’s because as soon as you stop your “diet,” you’re likely to gain back the pounds you worked so hard to shed. To be successful at weight loss, you need to make sustainable lifestyle changes, like making healthy food choices at most meals and getting plenty of exercise every week.

    The Takeaway

    • If you find losing weight — and keeping it off — to be a challenge, it’s not all in your head. Understanding how your body works can help you find weight loss success.
    • Your activity level, metabolism, and even your gender can impact how easy it is to slim down. Understanding your own body is a more effective way to drop pounds than following the dieting playbook of popular trends, friends and family.
    • Sticking to a combination of eating less and exercising more is key to creating a lifestyle that will help you lose weight and keep those pounds off for good.

Are you looking to take your fitness journey to the next level? If so, you might have come across the term “Anavar cycle” in your research. Anavar is a popular anabolic steroid known for its positive impact on muscle growth and performance.

In this article, we will delve into the vital information you need to know about the Anavar regimen to achieve optimal results and usage. Understanding the benefits, dosage, and duration, as well as the importance of pre-cycle preparations and post-cycle therapy, will empower you to make informed decisions regarding this powerful tool in your fitness arsenal. So, let’s explore how Oxandrolone can transform your fitness journey and help you unlock your true potential.

Understanding Anavar Cycle: Unveiling the Mechanics for Optimal Results

In the realm of performance-enhancing substances, anavar uk stands out as a popular choice among athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Oxandrolone belongs to the class of anabolic steroids. It exhibits potent anabolic properties with minimal androgenic effects, making it a desirable option for many. Anavar functions by binding to androgen receptors in the body, stimulating protein synthesis and enhancing nitrogen retention within the muscles. This leads to increased muscle growth, improved strength, and enhanced athletic performance.

    Anabolic Potency and Muscle Growth:
Anavar’s anabolic potency allows it to promote lean muscle gains without excessive water retention. This characteristic makes it a valuable tool for athletes seeking quality muscle development. By amplifying protein synthesis, Oxandrolone fosters a positive nitrogen balance, facilitating muscle repair and growth after intense workouts.

    Strength Enhancement and Performance Boost
The utilization of Oxandrolone during a cycle can significantly enhance strength levels. As the drug promotes anabolic activity, it aids in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy source for muscular contractions. This leads to increased power output, allowing individuals to lift heavier weights, perform more repetitions, and push through intense training sessions.

    Fat Loss and Body Composition
Anavar exhibits a unique ability to promote fat loss while preserving lean muscle mass. Through its impact on metabolism and lipolysis, Oxandrolone aids in the breakdown of stored body fat, particularly in stubborn areas. Simultaneously, it safeguards muscle tissue from catabolism, enabling individuals to achieve a more defined and ripped physique.

    Anavar Dosage Guidelines
To maximize the benefits and minimize potential risks, it is crucial to adhere to appropriate dosage guidelines when using Anavar. The optimal dosage of Oxandrolone varies depending on an individual’s experience, goals, and tolerance level.

    • Beginner Dosage: For those new to Anavar, a typical starting dosage ranges from 20 to 30 milligrams (mg) per day. This conservative dosage allows the body to acclimate to the compound and gauge the individual’s response.
    • Intermediate Dosage: As users become more experienced with Oxandrolone, the dosage can be increased to a range of 40 to 60 mg per day. This intermediate dosage provides a balance between gaining noticeable results and managing potential side effects.
    • Advanced Dosage: Advanced users who have developed a higher tolerance may opt for a dosage ranging from 60 to 80 mg per day. However, it is crucial to approach higher dosages with caution and carefully monitor any adverse effects.

    Cycle Duration
The duration of an Anavar cycle is typically between 6 to 8 weeks. This timeframe allows for significant benefits while minimizing the potential strain on the body. It is important to note that longer cycles may increase the risk of side effects and suppress natural hormone production.

Select your Anavar product from a wide range of renowned steroid brands.

Preparing for Anavar Cycle: Essential Steps for Success

Before embarking on an Anavar cycle, it is crucial to undertake certain preparatory measures to ensure a safe and effective experience. By following these essential steps, you can optimize your results and minimize potential risks.

    • Comprehensive Health Assessment: It is imperative to undergo a thorough health assessment before starting an Anavar protocol. Consult with a qualified healthcare professional who can assess your medical history, current health status, and any pre-existing conditions. This evaluation will help determine if Oxandrolone is suitable for you and if any precautions or modifications are necessary.
    • Blood Work Analysis: Undergoing blood work is essential to assess baseline hormone levels, liver function, lipid profiles, and other vital markers. This information allows healthcare professionals to monitor your body’s response to Anavar and adjust dosage and cycle duration accordingly.

Additionally, ensure you have a support system in place, whether it’s a training partner, coach, or online community, to provide guidance, motivation, and accountability throughout your journey.

Maximizing Results: Combining Anavar with Synergistic Compounds

When it comes to optimizing your fitness journey, combining Oxandrolone with synergistic compounds can take your results to new heights. By strategically incorporating additional substances into your cycle, you can amplify the benefits of where to buy anavar and achieve even more significant gains. However, it is essential to approach this practice with caution and consult with a healthcare professional before experimenting with combination therapies.

    Understanding Synergistic Compounds

Synergistic compounds are substances that work in harmony with Oxandrolone to enhance its effects. They can complement Anavar’s properties, promote muscle growth, boost strength, and improve overall performance. Common synergistic compounds include:

    • Testosterone: Combining Anavar with exogenous testosterone can provide synergistic effects, leading to increased muscle mass and strength gains.

Enhancing Training Performance and Recovery with Anavar Cycle
Anavar, when incorporated into a well-structured training and nutrition regimen, can significantly enhance an individual’s performance and recovery capabilities. By optimizing the synergistic effects of Oxandrolone with proper training techniques and nutrition, athletes and fitness enthusiasts can unlock their full potential and achieve outstanding results.

    • Training Strategies: Implementing effective training strategies is crucial when utilizing Anavar. Focus on compound exercises that target major muscle groups, such as squats, deadlifts, bench press, and overhead press. These exercises promote overall strength and muscle development. Additionally, incorporate progressive overload techniques to continually challenge your muscles and stimulate growth.
    • Training Frequency and Volume: Finding the right balance between training frequency and volume is essential. Increase your training frequency to 4-5 days per week, allowing for adequate recovery between sessions. Aim for moderate to high volume workouts, ensuring sufficient stimulus for muscle growth while avoiding overtraining.
    • Recovery and Rest: Proper rest and recovery are vital for maximizing the benefits of Anavar. Ensure you get enough sleep each night to support muscle repair and growth. Incorporate rest days into your training program to allow your body to recover and adapt. Utilize active recovery techniques, such as light cardio or stretching, on rest days to enhance blood flow and aid in muscle repair.
    • Nutrition and Supplementation: Maintaining a well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet is crucial. Consume adequate protein to support muscle growth and repair. Include complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and healthy fats for hormone production. Consider incorporating supplements that support muscle recovery, such as branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and whey protein.

Understanding Potential Side Effects and Mitigation

While Anavar offers numerous benefits for fitness enthusiasts, it is crucial to be aware of potential side effects and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and effective cycle. Oxandrolone is known for its relatively mild nature, but some individuals may still experience side effects. These can include acne, oily skin, changes in libido, and potential liver toxicity. It is important to note that these side effects are generally dose-dependent and can vary from person to person.

    Monitoring and Regular Check-ups
Regular monitoring of liver health through blood tests is essential during an Anavar regimen. This helps to detect any signs of liver strain or abnormalities early on. Additionally, individuals should pay attention to any unusual changes in their overall health and well-being and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.

    Proper Dosage and Duration
Adhering to recommended dosage guidelines and cycle duration is vital for minimizing the risk of side effects. Starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it over time allows the body to adapt to the compound. It is crucial never to exceed the recommended dosage as it may significantly increase the chances of adverse effects.

    Supportive Supplements and Protective Measures
Certain supplements, such as liver support aids (e.g., milk thistle), can be beneficial during an Oxandrolone cycle to promote liver health. Adequate hydration and a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can also help support overall well-being.

Ensuring a Smooth Recovery: Post-Cycle Therapy (PCT)

Post-Cycle Therapy (PCT) plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth recovery after an Oxandrolone cycle. It involves the use of specific substances and protocols designed to restore natural hormone production and mitigate potential side effects.

After an Anavar protocol, the body’s hormone levels may be suppressed. PCT aims to kickstart the body’s natural production of testosterone and other hormones. This helps to maintain the gains achieved during the cycle and prevent any undesired side effects associated with hormonal imbalances.

Commonly used substances for PCT include selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) such as Clomid or Nolvadex. These substances help block estrogen receptors and stimulate the production of luteinizing hormone (LH), which in turn stimulates testosterone production.

    Conclusion and Final Thoughts

The Anavar regimen presents a valuable opportunity for individuals seeking optimal results in their fitness journey. By understanding the mechanics of Oxandrolone, its benefits, and proper usage, individuals can harness its potential for lean muscle gains, increased strength, and improved endurance. However, it is crucial to adhere to recommended dosages and cycle durations while considering pre-cycle preparations and post-cycle therapy for a safe and effective experience. Combining Anavar with other compounds can further amplify its benefits, but caution must be exercised. By following these guidelines and adopting a comprehensive approach to training and nutrition, individuals can unlock remarkable transformations and achieve their fitness goals with the Oxandrolone cycle.

Sounds, Melodies, Music, and an ADHD Brain

“Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.”

    ~Pablo Casals

How do we connect ourselves to everything that surrounds us? Without sounds, life can be a bit boring 😪. Without some ambient music playing in the background, the complete silence can be deafening. Without melody 🎶, everything may seem to be in utter chaos. These three may be pleasing to everyone’s ear, but would you believe that there’s a complicated relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and music?

ADHD can impact relationship to music

    ‍

For some people struggling with ADHD, music can be essential to running our routines 👌. Sometimes, we prefer having them around as background noise to promote relaxation or even help when we have trouble focusing. But there are moments when we don’t want to listen to anything, a certain frequency irritates us quickly, or when even the slightest sound can ruin our mood for the entire day 😒.

    ‍

Have you ever measured time just by playing music? Sometimes, when I forget how long I’ve been waiting for someone, I often tell them, “Oh, I’ve been waiting for you for about eight songs, so… you’re late.” Aside from the distraction-slash-refuge music gives me when I’m bored, it also saves me during awkward times. But, not every time has music been my friend. There are moments I wished I was not sensitive to sounds, as they can easily give an opposite effect from what I stated 🙁.

    ‍

ADHD Symptoms That May Be Affected By Music

Many people with ADHD can experience a lot of symptom-related struggles when it comes to music. Sometimes, there are positive effects to us, but there are definitely moments when music affects our ADHD brains adversely.

    Music Can Easily Distract Us

Sometimes, being easily distracted is a trademark of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder 😅. Little things and details can make us lose focus and leave out anything we’re doing just because we are distracted now. What more if music plays in the background with easy-to-follow rhythms or medium-tempo music with catchy lyrics?

    ‍

Music, racing thoughts, and auditory stimulation can distract us during activities. You’ll sometimes find yourself singing the same lyrics over and over again 🎤🎤🎤. Playing the melodies inside the brain can distract us for the rest of the day.

    ‍

The auditory beat stimulation we experience when we are supposed to be listening to something far more critical overpowers our attention in the present moment, making us more likely to forget the task or discussion 😥.

    ‍

    ‍

Music can be distracting for people with ADHD

    Music Can Help Improve Focus

One of the possible effects of music on our ADHD brain is it can distract us easily. But there are also statements saying music is an excellent way to improve and promote concentration. How can both be possible? 🤔

    ‍

Music can help us focus better

Well, it is true that music can positively affect our ADHD brains. Listening to music, especially those with structured rhythm, can make us feel upbeat and stay easily tuned with what we are doing. There’s also a report about how background music or white noise 🎼helps us improve concentration and remember things easily.

    ‍

According to the same report, certain genres can give us increased focus, and specific music helps us promote concentration. Listening to classical music can have potential benefits, especially when we want to improve mood and productivity. Jazz music can also boost creativity and reduce stress, which can make it easier for you to focus.

    ‍

However, certain conditions should be considered to increase cognitive performance, like how fast the beat is and how loud the volume is 🔊. The background music should be played as an ambient sound to possibly benefit people.

    ‍

Music Can Produce High Dopamine Levels

As music can be a way to promote concentration, it can also boost our energy and make us highly energized or happy. How? According to some tests held by researchers, music can increase dopamine levels in our brains. The results suggest that music can give us enough dopamine, which can translate into a mood boost.

    ‍

We can get dopamine from listening to the same song again and again

Also, the auditory beat stimulation we get from listening to other genres of music can help us manage ADHD & improve cognitive performance. However, depending on personal preference, some music may not be as appealing to us as others. Finding the right kind of music that makes you feel more productive, focused, and relaxed while working on activities or tasks is essential 👌.

Music Can Help Us Regulate Mood and Emotion

Research suggests that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a chronic condition that can limit how we handle our emotions or feelings. ADHD can also be one of the many reasons we can be grumpy or irritable 😠or have trouble calming down and regulating our mood due to certain ADHD symptoms. As a lot of people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder struggle with emotion regulation and impulsivity, music can benefit those who need help to cope 🎹.

    ‍

Music can be a powerful tool to relax the mind and body. It is believed that certain kinds of classical or instrumental music can reduce stress and anxiety levels in some people with ADHD due to its soothing effect on the mind 🧘.

    ‍

Other forms of music, like electronic music or medium-tempo music, can also help manage ADHD symptoms, mainly to promote attentiveness and focus. Listening to upbeat music can give us positive energy and motivate us when working on activities or tasks 😉. These types of music can also make us consume excess energy, eventually wearing us out and improving our mood afterward.

Listening to Music Can Be Exhausting Too

Have you ever struggled to sleep because there’s a particular song stuck in your brain the entire day, and you can’t shrug it off because you have a hyperactive brain? 🛌 It happens to me a lot, especially after a long day of being busy and trying to hyperfocus with something as background noise. As I got immersed in the activity, I didn’t notice that I was slowly humming the sound I heard and then getting on my brain until I went to sleep.

    ‍

That’s something that we cannot easily control at times. When an ADHD brain cannot stop to think and do its own thing, even when we shut our ears, or even if we are in a room with complete silence, when this familiar music starts to creep in inside our head, I’ll bet it will keep you awake for the next couple of hours 💤.

    ‍

Certain ADHD symptoms, like racing thoughts, can give us sleepless nights. Although music can help us regulate our mood, it can be exhausting too 🙁. When exposed to unusual or too much music, our brain can go into overdrive and interrupt our sleeping patterns. Thus, finding the right music that helps you relax and focus your thoughts is best.

    ‍

it can be exhausting to have a song stuck in your hyperactive brain

Loud, Banging Music Can Send us into Overdrive

What do you usually do when you are not fond of the music playing in the background, especially if it’s too loud or noisy? Lucky for you if you can control the volume or you can shut them off 🎚️. But what if we are in a public setting? When you are in transit, your driver turns the radio on and flips through different radio stations. Then he found heavy metal 🥁 music that he played for the next few blocks.

    ‍

That can get annoying, right? For some people with ADHD, loud or banging music can send us into overdrive mode. It’s like we are in a battle against noise and distraction as our brain is too sensitive to handle it. As a result, concentrating becomes more challenging, or we want to listen to something else to cope with the situation. Sound sensitivity can be common for some people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is when external stimuli, such as loud sounds, creaking, or humming noises, can easily distract us and become overwhelming to handle.

    ‍

People with ADHD can have sound sensitivity including to music

Do you enjoy going to the grocery shops? 🛒 There are moments when I sometimes feel like running an errand at a big supermarket can be exhausting. Aside from their blinding lights, loud sounds and plenty of announcements 📣 over the speaker make me lose focus on what I need to buy. It’s challenging for some people with ADHD to do this task, especially if sensory overload kicks in

There’s Healing Through Music Therapy for People with ADHD

How do we make listening to music soothing and relaxing? This is where music therapy comes in. Music therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses music to create, express and relax our minds 🎵. When used correctly, it can help strengthen the same areas of the brain affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

    ‍

Music therapists use different activities, such as playing an instrument, listening to binaural beats or ambient sounds, and singing 🧑‍🎤. Music therapy can help reduce stress and other symptoms related to ADHD, such as inattentiveness and impulsivity. Some people with ADHD may perform better after participating in a music therapy session than those who did not.

    ‍

In addition to traditional treatments that can be prescribed to a lot of people with ADHD, like taking medications or attending behavioral therapy, listening to music is also a great form of self-care that can help them manage their symptoms. It’s best to talk to coordinate with your therapist 🧑‍⚕️ regarding consulting a music therapist to improve focus and manage ADHD symptoms.

Millions of American men use a prescription testosterone injection or gel as forms of testosterone replacement therapy (often referred to as TRT therapy) to restore normal levels of the manly hormone. The ongoing pharmaceutical marketing blitz promises that low-T treatment can make men feel more alert, energetic, mentally sharp, and sexually functional. However, legitimate safety concerns linger.

Signs of low testosteroneMIND• Depression• Reduced self-confidence• Difficulty concentrating• Disturbed sleepBODY• Declining muscle and bone mass• Increased body fat• Fatigue• Swollen or tender breasts• Flushing or hot flashesSEXUAL FUNCTION• Lower sex drive• Fewer spontaneous erections• Difficulty sustaining erections

    The low-T boom

Marketers urge men to talk to their doctors if they have certain “possible signs” that mean they could need low-T treatment. So many men continue to ask about it after seeing ads that ask “Do you feel tired?”

Just being tired isn’t enough to seek testosterone replacement therapy. General fatigue and malaise has so many other causes, and when most men get a blood test, the result is a normal testosterone level.

If a man’s testosterone is below the normal range, it’s best to repeat it once more to be sure before starting testosterone therapy — often staying on it indefinitely. There is a bit of a testosterone trap. Men get started on testosterone replacement and they feel better, but then it’s hard to come off of it. On treatment, the body stops making testosterone. Men can often feel a big difference when they stop therapy because their body’s testosterone production has not yet recovered.

What are the risks of testosterone therapy?

A relatively small number of men experience immediate side effects of testosterone supplementation, such as acne, disturbed breathing while sleeping (worsening sleep apnea), breast swelling or tenderness, or swelling in the ankles. Doctors also watch out for high red blood cell counts, which could increase the risk of clotting.

Older observational studies suggested that long term testosterone use could increase their risk of cardiovascular disease. Also testosterone is known to stimulate growth of prostate cancer in men diagnosed with the condition. Recent clinical trials, which provide more accurate information compared to observational studies, have provided some comfort around both the heart and prostate cancer risks. For men who clearly have testosterone deficiency, there is no apparent increased risk of heart attack or stroke or greater chance of developing a new prostate cancer from testosterone replacement therapy.

Although this new information is somewhat reassuring, men and their doctors should still weigh these issues before committing to long term testosterone therapy.

    Take a cautious approach

Here is how to take a cautious approach to testosterone therapy.

Take stock of your health first

    • Have you considered other reasons why you may be experiencing fatigue, low sex drive, and other symptoms attributable to low testosterone? For example, do you eat a balanced, nutritious diet? Do you exercise regularly? Do you sleep well? Address these factors before turning to hormone replacement therapy for men.
    • If your sex life is not what it used to be, have you ruled out relationship or psychological issues that could be contributing?
    • If erectile dysfunction has caused you to suspect “low T” as the culprit, consider that cardiovascular disease can also cause erectile dysfunction.

    Get an accurate assessment

    • Inaccurate or misinterpreted test results can either falsely diagnose or miss a case of testosterone deficiency. Your testosterone level should be measured between 7 am and 10 am, when it’s at its peak. Confirm a low reading with a second test on a different day. It may require multiple measurements and careful interpretation to establish bioavailable testosterone, or the amount of the hormone that is able to have effects on the body. Consider getting a second opinion from an endocrinologist.
    • After starting therapy, follow-up with your physician periodically to have testosterone checks and other lab tests to make sure the therapy is not causing any problems with your prostate or blood chemistry.

Be mindful of the still possible risks of testosterone replacement therapy

    • Approach testosterone therapy with caution if you are at high risk for prostate cancer; have severe urinary symptoms from prostate enlargement; or have diagnosed heart disease, a previous heart attack, or multiple risk factors for heart problems.
    • Ask your doctor to explain the various side effects for the different formulations of testosterone. The different treatments include testosterone injections, gels, and patches. Know what to look for if something goes wrong.

    Have realistic expectations

    • Testosterone therapy is not a fountain of youth. There is no proof that it will restore you to the level of physical fitness or sexual function of your youth, make you live longer, prevent heart disease or prostate cancer, or improve your memory or mental sharpness.
    • If erectile function has been a problem, testosterone therapy might not fix it. In fact, it might increase your sex drive but not allow you to act on it. You may also need medication or other therapy for difficulty getting or maintaining erections.

HERE’S A FUN fact: According to a study published in 2023, the average penis length has increased by 24% over the 29-year span from 1942 and 2021 (what a time to be alive!). Still, though, only about half of men report being satisfied with the size of their members. That explains why Google searches for “Do penis pumps work?” and “What do penis pumps do?” are up by somewhere between 50 and 70% in recent years.

Penis pumps have long been touted as a quick and easy way to visually enhance the size of your junk. But the jury has long been out on whether or not they can actually live up to these lofty promises.

In the interest of tempering your expectations, let’s get one thing straight: There’s no device that can permanently supersize what you’re working with down there. Still, that’s not to say that a penis pump is useless. Quite to the contrary, in fact: This handy little contraption uses a vacuum effect to stimulate—and maintain—blood flow to the penis, thus helping you to get hard quicker and stay hard longer. So, what does this have to do with size? Well, studies show that when your penis fills with blood and gets hard, it can grow up to 3 inches.

If you don’t have any trouble in the boner department, a penis pump may not do much for you. But it’s estimated that three-quarters of men globally struggle with erectile dysfunction—and for them, a penis pump may very well come in handy.

Before you start slipping your junk into that plastic tube, though, there are a few basic things you should know about penis pumps and how they work. Read on for the full-lowdown, including some must-know tips about using them safely and effectively.

    What is a penis pump?

IN SIMPLE TERMS, a penis pump is a non-invasive device that creates negative pressure to suction blood into the blood vessels around your member. These pumps—also known as vacuum erection devices (VEDs)—can use air or water to create this pressure. By causing an increase in blood flow to the penis, the device produces an erection.

Fun fact: penis pumps have been around for a pretty long time. American physician John King is credited with inventing this contraption in 1874. The problem with King’s prototype, though, was that the user lost their erection as soon as the pump was removed. Needless to say, these devices have come a long way since then.

    Do penis pumps really work?

EXPERTS AGREE THAT penis pumps do, indeed, help men get a long-lasting erection. In fact, 2018 research shows that penis pumps can help people with ED achieve an erection about 90% of the time. Up to 77% of people with ED and their partners report being satisfied with the benefits of using a penis pump.

“VEDs do not require surgery or injections, and are effective in producing an erection in many men,” says Amy Pearlman, MD, a board-certified urologist, men’s sexual health specialist, and co-founder of Prime Institute.

Studies suggest that penis pumps can also help preserve penis size and function and reduce shrinkage, following prostate cancer surgery.

It’s important to note that using a penis pump does not treat any underlying causes of erectile dysfunction, says Dr. James Elist, MD—a urologist in private practice and inventor of Penuma, the first FDA-cleared penile implant.

According to Elist, the effects of using a penis pump can last for up to 30 minutes. This can range, though, depending on your overall health and level of arousal.

    Are penis pumps safe?

ACCORDING TO PEARLMAN and Elist, penis pumps are generally considered safe for most men to use. However, keep in mind that using a penis pump can worsen existing penile conditions, like priapism.

In some cases, penis pumps can cause blood clots, scarring, and other damage—but don’t worry, these issues are rare and typically only happen with improper use. One older study of 1,500 penis pump users showed that not a single participant reported any serious adverse effects.

Here are some precautions Pearlman and Elist advise taking to minimize the risk of any negative side effects:

    • Consult with your doctor to ensure that you’re a good candidate for a penis pump.

    • Following the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

    • Consider applying a warm compress before sexual activity as the penis pump can make the penis colder to touch.

    • Follow a pattern of pumping three times and then pausing for 10 seconds until you achieve a solid erection. If you pump too fast or too much, Pearlman warns that you may experience pain, bruising, and skin discoloration.

You’ll likely feel some pressure or a stretch in your penis, Pearlman explains—but you should never be in pain using a penis pump. If you do feel extreme discomfort or pain, stop using it immediately.

How to Use a Penis Pump

USING A PENIS pump for the first time may feel intimidating—but they’re actually pretty easy to operate.

Just follow these steps, per Pearlman and Elist’s advice:

    1. Trim public hair around the base of your penis. This isn’t a requirement, but it’s well worth the extra step—it allows you to get a closer seal, and prevents your pubic hair from getting caught in the ring (ouch).

    2. Apply a water-based lubricant on the shaft and base of the penis. Lube reduces friction to prevent irritation, and also makes it easier to slip the pump off after you use it.

    3. Insert your penis into the plastic tube—you may need to reposition your scrotum here until it’s comfortable. Then, use the attached hand pump or electric pump attached to suction out the air and create a vacuum effect. Keep in mind: it’s a marathon, not a race—so build the pressure slowly.

    4. Most people get an erection in 30 seconds to seven minutes. Once you’re hard, hold the base of your penis firmly with one hand while you remove the tube, and then slip the constriction ring around the base of the penis to keep it hard. (If you’re using the penis pumps as part of a rehabilitation program rather than for sexual activity, Pearlman recommends skipping this step.)

    5. To reduce the risk of side effects, never use the pump or constriction ring for longer than 30 minutes.

As a general rule, Pearlman and Elist say penis pumps are safe for daily use. Still, they advise checking in with your doctor to get more personalized guidance on the appropriate frequency for you.

Is a penis pump right for me?

YOU MIGHT WANT to try a penis pump if you have difficulty getting—or staying—hard during sex. By the way—whether you know it or not—erections aren’t just important for your sex life, but also for your overall penile health.

“Damage can occur when the penis is flaccid for a long time,” explains Pearlman. “This is due to a lack of well-oxygenated blood to the erectile tissue. It can cause tissue to lose its flexibility and scar. For this reason, early intervention is important for any person not getting daily erections.”

All that said, penis pumps aren’t for everyone. If you have a history of blood clots, a diagnosed blood disorder like sickle cell anemia, or take blood thinners, it probably isn’t safe to use.

“And some men, even if good candidates for penis pumps, may just find them to be cumbersome, uncomfortable, or ineffective,” Pearlman adds. “Remember: a penis pump is just one of many options when it comes to optimizing genital and sexual health.”

How to Find the Best Penis Pump for You

NOWADAYS, PENIS PUMPS are available over the counter online, at adult/erotic shops, and even in some drugstores. But not all pumps are created equal: To minimize the risk of injury, consider seeking out a penis pump that’s FDA-approved, meaning it’s been evaluated thoroughly for safety and quality. Specifically, you want a penis pump with a vacuum limiter—this safety feature prevents the device from creating too much pressure.

Choosing the right device may feel downright overwhelming given how many choices there are—from good old-fashioned, no-frills manual pumps to high-tech electric pumps with smart motors and built-in strokers. Ultimately, Elist says the most important factor is fit. Penis pumps are not one size fits all, so look for one that comes in a range of size options to ensure it’s comfortable and provides an optimal seal.

If you’re still not sure which one to buy, Elist suggests asking your healthcare provider or a sex therapist for product recommendations. This is especially crucial if you’re using a penis pump to treat ED or have any pre-existing health conditions. Your primary care doctor or urologist can even write a prescription for an FDA-cleared penis pump that meets your specific needs.

The bottom line? Penis pumps may not give you a massive size boost. But make no bones about it (see what we did there?)—they can be a useful, easy tool for getting stronger, longer-lasting erections without the need for medication or surgery.

    Relieving sciatica pain during pregnancy

Sciatica is one cause of back pain during pregnancy. People can relieve the symptoms using stretches, gentle massage, and other remedies.

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy, affecting more than two-thirds of women.

Sciatica is pain that irritation of the sciatic nerve causes. The main symptom is shooting pain that starts in the low back and radiates down the leg.

Sciatica is one of the less common causes of back pain during pregnancy. Sciatica is more likely to arise during the later stages when the fetus is large.

In this article, we look at the causes of sciatica during pregnancy, its symptoms, and ways to relieve this nerve-related pain during pregnancy with stretches, massage, and other remedies.

    Causes

Pregnant woman with back pain due to sciatica
Symptoms of sciatica can include pain in the low back and legs.

Sciatica is a symptom of another problem rather than a condition in itself.

The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that branches off the spinal cord in the low back and runs through the buttocks and down the legs. This nerve helps the lower part of the back, legs, and feet to feel sensations, such as pressure, pain, and temperature.

During pregnancy, sciatica can arise if the growing uterus and fetus put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing inflammation, irritation, and pain.

Less often, people may experience sciatica because of a slipped disc in the spine. Also, a spasm of the piriformis muscle deep in the buttocks can irritate the nerve and cause sciatica.

    Symptoms

The primary symptom of sciatica is pain in the low back, buttocks, and legs. It can start in the low back and radiate down into the legs.

Other symptoms doctors associate with sciatica include:

    • leg pain
    • poor bladder control
    • numbness, tingling, or pins and needles in the legs
    • weakness of the low back or legs
    • burning sensation in the lower extremities
    • pain that worsens with coughing, moving, or sneezing

Women experiencing these symptoms during pregnancy should mention it at their next doctor’s appointment.

People can usually relieve the pain they connect to sciatica with some simple home remedies. In most cases, the pain will go away on its own within a few weeks.

    Stretches

Light stretches in the back region are a great way to loosen up tight muscles and relieve pain from sciatica.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that women avoid exercises that involve lying on their back. This is because when in this position the uterus presses against a large vein that leads to the heart.

Try these stretches each day to relieve sciatica pain within a few weeks:

    1. Seated piriformis stretch

Seated piriformis stretch gif for sciatica pregnancy stretch

The piriformis muscle is deep in the glutes, or muscles of the buttocks. Spasms in these muscles can cause sciatica pain. This stretch can help ease muscle tightness and reduce spasms.

To do the seated piriformis stretch:

    • Sit on a chair with feet flat on the ground.
    • Lift the left leg and place the foot on the opposite knee.
    • Lean forward slowly, keeping the back straight, until you feel a stretch in the low back and glutes.
    • Hold the stretch for 30 seconds.
    • Repeat the move with the right leg.

    2. Child’s Pose

Childs pose yoga move for sciatica pregnancy stretch

Child’s Pose is a popular yoga position for people who are pregnant. This simple, restful pose will stretch the muscles in the lower part of the back and can help ease hip and leg pain.

    To do Child’s Pose:

    • Kneel on a soft surface or yoga mat.
    • Touch the big toes together and spread the knees apart to make room for the belly.
    • Sit with the back straight.
    • Inhaling, reach the arms above the head.
    • Exhaling, reach the arms forward and place the palms on the ground.
    • Sit back, bringing the bottom towards the heels.
    • Keep taking deep breaths, stretching the arms forward a little more with each breath, feeling the stretch in the low back and shoulders.
    • Walk the hands back slowly and return to a kneeling position.

    3. Standing hamstring stretch

standing hamstring stretch at the park

Stretching the hamstrings, which are the large muscles along the backs of the thighs, can release tension in the back, legs, and glutes. This stretch will help keep flexibility in the muscles around the sciatic nerve.

To do the standing hamstring stretch:

    • Stand upright with both feet on the ground.
    • Raise the left leg and place it on a stable object, with the leg straight and the toes pointing towards the ceiling.
    • Gently bend forward to stretch the hamstring muscle.
    • Hold the position for 30 seconds.
    • Gently place the foot back on the floor.
    • Repeat the stretch with the right leg.

    4. Kneeling lunges

Pregnant woman performing a kneeling lunge stretch for sciatica

Kneeling lunges work by loosening the muscles in the hips. This can ease pressure on the nerves and the muscles surrounding the hips, including the back and leg muscles.

    To do the kneeling lunge:

    • Kneel on a soft surface or yoga mat.
    • Step the left foot in front so that the thigh is parallel with the ground.
    • Exhaling, shift your body weight forward to feel a stretch in the hip and the leg.
    • Hold the stetch for 30 seconds.
    • Repeat the move with the right foot.

    Gentle exercise

Doing gentle exercises during pregnancy can strengthen the abdominal and back muscles to reduce the risk of further pregnancy-related back pain.

People with sciatica can speak to a doctor before doing specific exercises to ensure they are safe.

Brisk walking, stationary cycling, yoga, and swimming are good options. Swimming can be especially beneficial for people who have pain in their lower back, as the buoyancy of the water can relieve pressure on the joints and muscles.

Learn more about how to exercise safely during pregnancy here.

    Massage

Gentle massage over the lower section of the back can help to relieve inflammation and discomfort around the sciatic nerve. A person should ensure their massage only involves light strokes and stops if it feels too strong or painful.

When finding a masseuse, it is best to choose one who specializes in pregnancy massage or has experience in this area.

People can also try self-massage at home using a tennis ball. In the early stages of pregnancy, try lying on the floor with a tennis ball under the lower part of the back, and rolling it gently around.

In the later stages of pregnancy, lean back against a wall or chair support with the tennis ball between your back and the wall.

    Other remedies

In addition to massage and stretching, there are other things that people can do at home to prevent or manage sciatica during pregnancy, including:

    • Avoid sitting for long periods by standing up and walking periodically.
    • Use heat packs on the low back or buttocks.
    • Take a warm bath.
    • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen.
    • Use a foam roller on the buttocks and lower legs. People can choose between foam roller brands online.
    • Keep good posture when sitting, especially at a computer. Try placing a support pillow at the back of the chair.

    Medical treatment

If home remedies are not improving pain associated with sciatica, a doctor may recommend steroid injections or a nerve block to help reduce the pain.

Doctors can recommend more advanced and surgical treatments for sciatica, but these are not usually appropriate during pregnancy. If the pain persists after the baby is born, a person can talk to their doctor about treatment options.

    Diagnosis

Low back pain is common during pregnancy. Sciatica pain is less common, however. A doctor can help work out the cause of this type of back pain.

The doctor will first ask about a person’s history and do a physical exam. They may ask about the type of pain, what makes it better or worse, when it started, and about any other symptoms.

As part of the physical exam, a doctor may feel the painful area on the back or legs, or ask the woman to perform certain maneuvers, such as walking, squatting, or raising a straight leg. This helps to determine which nerve the pregnancy might be affecting.

Sometimes, doctors may ask for diagnostic testing to gain more information or rule out other more serious causes of the pain.

Imaging tests to help diagnose low back pain can include:

    Risk factors

Besides pregnancy, people who are overweight or obese may also be at risk of developing sciatica from increased pressure on the back and spine.

Other people at risk for sciatica include:

    • people who sit for long periods
    • people who have jobs or do activities that cause a lot of twisting or heavy lifting
    • people who are older

    Prevention

There is no real way to prevent sciatica. Avoiding too much time spent sitting or in the same position can help, as can maintaining a healthy weight.

Also, protecting the back through regular stretching and exercise, and avoiding lifting with the back, are important.

    Outlook

Sciatica, though uncomfortable, usually resolves within a few weeks. People can treat sciatica at home during their pregnancy.

If home remedies are not working, it is important to mention symptoms to the doctor in case a person needs further tests or more specialized treatment to improve their symptoms.

V2205034 The 1 Missing Factor with Low Testosterone Is

    What Is Testosterone?

The testicles and ovaries produce testosterone. Producing too little or too much testosterone can affect your physical and mental health.

Testosterone is a hormone found in humans, as well as in other animals. In men, the testicles primarily make testosterone. Women’s ovaries also make testosterone, though in much smaller amounts.

The production of testosterone starts to increase significantly during puberty and begins to dip after age 30 or so.

Testosterone is most often associated with sex drive and plays a vital role in sperm production. It also affects bone and muscle mass, the way men store fat in the body, and even red blood cell production.

A man’s testosterone levels can also affect his mood.

    Low testosterone levels

Low levels of testosterone, also called low T levels, can produce a variety of symptoms in men, including:

    • decreased sex drive
    • less energy
    • weight gain
    • feelings of depression
    • moodiness
    • low self-esteem
    • less body hair
    • thinner bones

While testosterone production naturally tapers off as a man ages, other factors can cause hormone levels to drop.

Injury to the testicles and cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation can negatively affect testosterone production.

Chronic health conditions and stress can also reduce testosterone production. Some of these include:

Testosterone levels decline steadily in adult women, however, low T levels can also produce a variety of symptoms, including:

    • low libido
    • reduced bone strength
    • poor concentration
    • depression

Low T levels in women can be caused by removal of the ovaries as well as diseases of the pituitary, hypothalamus, or adrenal glands.

Testosterone therapy may be prescribed for women with low T levels, however, the treatment’s effectiveness on improving sexual function or cognitive function among postmenopausal women is unclear.

    Testing testosterone

A simple blood test can determine testosterone levels. There’s a wide range of normal or healthy levels of testosterone circulating in the bloodstream.

Normal male testosterone levels range between 280 and 1,100 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL) for adult males, and between 15 and 70 ng/dL for adult females, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Ranges can vary among different labs, so it’s important to speak with your doctor about your results.

If an adult male’s testosterone levels are below 300 ng/dL, a doctor may do a workup to determine the cause of low testosterone, according to the American Urological Association.

Low testosterone levels could be a sign of pituitary gland problems. The pituitary gland sends a signaling hormone to the testicles to produce more testosterone.

A low T test result in an adult man could mean the pituitary gland isn’t working properly. But a young teen with low testosterone levels might be experiencing delayed puberty.

Moderately elevated testosterone levels in men may produce few noticeable symptoms. Boys with higher levels of testosterone may begin puberty earlier. Women with high testosterone may develop masculine features.

Abnormally high levels of testosterone could be the result of an adrenal gland disorder, or even cancer of the testes.

High testosterone levels may also occur in less serious conditions. For example, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which can affect males and females, is a rare but natural cause for elevated testosterone production.

If your testosterone levels are extremely high, your doctor may order other tests to find out the cause.

    Testosterone replacement therapy

Reduced testosterone production, a condition known as hypogonadism, doesn’t always require treatment.

You may be a candidate for testosterone replacement therapy if low T is interfering with your health and quality of life. Artificial testosterone can be administered orally, through injections, or with gels or skin patches.

Replacement therapy may produce desired results, such as greater muscle mass and a stronger sex drive. But the treatment does carry some side effects. These include:

    • oily skin
    • fluid retention
    • testicles shrinking
    • decrease in sperm production

Some studiesTrusted Source have found no greater risk of prostate cancer with testosterone replacement therapy, but it continues to be a topic of ongoing research.

One study suggests that there’s a lower risk of aggressive prostate cancers for those on testosterone replacement therapy, but more research is needed.

    The takeaway

Testosterone is most commonly associated with sex drive in men. It also affects mental health, bone and muscle mass, fat storage, and red blood cell production.

Abnormally low or high levels can affect a man’s mental and physical health.

Your doctor can check your testosterone levels with a simple blood test. Testosterone therapy is available to treat men with low levels of testosterone.

If you have low T, ask your doctor if this type of therapy might benefit you.
